Futures are wagers on competition or tournament outrights (e.g. Denver Broncos to win the Super Bowl, Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon) or player prop futures (e.g. Aaron Rodgers to pass for a certain number of touchdowns in a season). Futures markets are settled based on the final result of a match as outlined by official governing bodies. Any market amendments made after the final table, such as points dedications, will not affect futures bets.

Betting on games that are postponed and abandoned without any play will see all bets void unless the game is rescheduled and played within 24 hours. All bets on the winner’s market in baseball games will be settled if the game has reached a minimum of eight and a half innings unless stated otherwise. Bets on totals markets in basketball and other sports will be settled if the full allocation of rounds has been played, including a disqualification or retirement from either boxer.

Those involved in the NBA and NFL have both spoken out against sports betting, but the NHL has taken a different approach. Since the Vegas Golden Knights were introduced in 2017, the NHL has signed sponsorship deals with William Hill and MGM Resorts International that include betting partnerships. The league also has multiple sportsbooks inside of its stadiums and will open them for the first time on game days this year.

The NHL has also partnered with FanDuel, DraftKings and Caesars Entertainment to run sportsbooks in the states where they’re licensed. And it’s not just the major sports leagues that have embraced the industry; even high school teams now have sportsbooks on their campuses.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association has a policy against betting on its events, but individual colleges have policies of their own that vary from state to state. For example, the University of Alabama and Auburn University prohibit their student athletes from placing bets, while the University of Virginia allows its students to do so as long as they don’t profit from the bets. If a player is found to have placed bets on a game, they may be subject to disciplinary action from the league. This can range from a six-game suspension to a permanent ban from the sport. However, if the player is willing to admit that they made a bet, they may be reinstated. This is similar to what happened in the Black Sox scandal in 1919. The Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that states can legalize sports betting. Massachusetts launched its first in-person sportsbooks in January of 2023, and Minnesota passed legislation to allow for online betting in August of 2022. California, meanwhile, had two propositions on its November 2022 ballot that would have legalized sports betting, but both were rejected by voters.
