Articles on poker history mention a wide variety of earlier vying games, not all of which have much bearing on Poker. Some of these include the Primiera or Primero (16th – 17th centuries), the Gilet or Guillet (17th – 18th centuries), Brag (18th – 19th century, English and American), and Bouillotte (19th – 20th centuries, French and Italian).
The earliest reference to poker as a gambling game is in the first edition of Hoyle’s Games in 1845. Other games, such as Whisk(e)y Poker and Chinese Poker, are not considered to be forms of poker, despite having the word “Poker” in their name. These games do not contain either the element of vying or the community cards.
