Fire and EMS personnel from Chancellor Volunteer Fire and Rescue (CVFR) visited the 3rd Grade classes at Chancellor Elementary School on Monday, February 10.  The students learned about the importance of smoke detectors as well as the need of a fire evacuation plan for their homes to include identifying a central meeting place outside the home where everyone will meet after evacuating the home.  The CVFR spoke with the students about the dangers of matches and the need to prevent wildfires. Highlights of the visit included meeting Sparky and seeing two firefighters in full turnout gear with the breathing apparatus.  This allowed the students to see exactly what a firefighter would look like if they had to come in their home during a fire emergency. The message offered to the students to share with their family and friends was that the firefighters will be there to help even though the firefighter may look very scary in all their protective equipment.  The students were encouraged to come TO the firefighter instead of running away or trying to hide from them.  The students had the opportunity to speak with the firefighters while they were in their gear, to touch the uniform, and to gain an understanding of what to expect should there ever be a need for the firefighters to respond to their home/school/church or other location.
